American African Spirituality in 2017

Mixed feelings after reading the  announcement of a panel for the upcoming Afro-Latino Fest (http://remezcla.com/music/afro-latino-festival-symposium-preview/)

This is just one in a series of recent panels and articles about Diasporic African religions that have been highlighted since media and a more general public have “discovered” symbolic meanings in Beyoncé’s iconic Lemonade video.

I’m glad to see more pan-Africans being educated about the religions, but I’m also seeing very Westernized, capitalist versions being codified in various ways, including the aesthetic representations. It reminds me of what has happened to Native American spiritual traditions entering the mainstream and being co-opted to varying extents.

We survived the horrors and upheavals of the Diaspora and all that it wrought through a painful, necessary secretiveness, and by the creative genius that allowed our Ancestors to preserve and adapt. Yet I can’t help but wonder if the ostensible “freedom” we’re witnessing and experiencing  will destroy essential ways of knowing and being in the world. In a society where the Federal Court recently legalized discrimination against hiring folks with locs (https://www.google.com/amp/www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/amp/u-s-court-rules-dreadlock-ban-during-hiring-process-legal-n652211) and where black folks are incarcerated and killed with impunity by authorities, and where every creative work is colonized and exploited for the benefit of the dominant culture, I find myself questioning the type and quality of Africanisms and resistance that is tolerated or “allowed” to flourish. In my experience, our cultures are tolerated just long enough to turn them to profit in some way, or to be used as evidence against us.

Make no mistake: I don’t question the aims of the sisters and brothers seeking solidarity, community, and a spirituality rooted in our ancestral cultures and it makes my heart sing to hear the names of the Orishas spoken without the long needed camouflage of Christian saints. And yet I’m wary…Our long history here leaves me feeling that our beautiful, brave, and uncloaked young ones are standing in the crosshairs of racist capitalism in a new, albeit familiar way. Are they, in a manner of speaking, the new Ghost Shirt dancers, empowered and empowering, just moments before their deaths? My pessimism has nought to do with those true souls and everything to do with too many decades/centuries of observing The Others (#ThoseWhoDoNotLoveUs) And no, my pessimism doesn’t cool my fervent belief in Resistance. It does, at its best, make me want to entreat us to carefully consider what we’re creating for the generations and take particular care in weighing what we choose to ignore or leave behind.

But I guess my less agnostic beloveds would  hush their Aunty and say  that as always, this is the crossroads where Olofi, Elegua,  and the Potencias will manifest their will…

Let us listen; we shall see

Re: New York Free Tuition

To the ignorant folks who think that you can feed and educate a family on 125 K in NYC/LI: please, go back to your imaginary Kansas. A single person here needs about 50 K just to have a totally no-frills life here where the average house costs $400,000 (in the burbs) and 1 bedrm apartments start at 1,200 per month, mostly in places you don’t wish to be. (like Staten Island, bwahaha) It’s not a snob thing and we wish it wasn’t true, but really, this “free” tuition plan will help working people to get their kids through school, and that’s as it should be. And before you say it, think about what it would take to move: you don’t just pick up and go. Every single thing costs more here, from the barrettes in your daughter’s hair to the plumbing, transportation, and toothpaste. 

Furthermore, the jobs aren’t often in your low rent areas, they’re in expensive cities, so hush!

We desperately NEED an educated public: democracy is rooted in the concept, as is our ability to stay competitive in the world. This new plan doesn’t cover dorms and the multiple expenses that come with education in this century. It’s not a cure for the problems in our education system or access to it, but it may save our students from a lifetime of crippling debt. So please just shut up and enjoy what you may have without begrudging others the ability to improve their lives and the prosperity of the nation.

From February 2, 2013: More now than ever

I just want to say that although I know we are in a world of hurt and that it may even be too late for some of the solutions that we see being put forth now, I think that the real humans- conscious, compassionate, ruthlessly honest and willing to act on their insights and adapt- will survive and perhaps even “win.”
So I will fight on behalf of the earth and all sentient beings, and I will have times of doubt/fear/exhaustion and days when I can’t see or imagine how we could possibly survive the growing horror. But if you really believe that it’s only going to end horribly, keep that shite to yourself, I don’t want it in my life. Life is a precarious thing and for many, each day brings dilemmas, moral and material. We don’t always know what to do or how to be, but we put our practices in front of us and follow the good red road/saddhana/good reality/whatever you want to call it, for one day more, and we learn to let that be enough.

You do the right thing not because you always believe that it will “save” us, but because there is no other way to live.

I just realized the big difference between many of us:

I am furious, certainly frustrated, but I’m not afraid! Yes, this ish is frightening, but the US has NEVER been safe for me or mine. This land, this homeland that was once a place where my ancestors lived in relative civility, was not “America.” The nightmares of history aren’t ancient dusty memories. My childhood was peopled with family who had been enslaved, neighbors with tattooed arms, grandparents who told stories about parents returning from the Trail of Tears. I’ve had more encounters with racism (including being held for hours when trying to re-enter the US every freaking time I’ve traveled) than you’ve had pairs of shoes.
So none of this is new or surprising, nor did it happen overnight. This is what it’s always been, just now in your face, yet apparently still deniable for many. It stinks, and I’m really glad that people are protesting and organizing and resisting. It’s about time all you Rip Van Winkles woke up, and I hope you’ve got your crates of Social No Doze/Redbull/red pills handy and that those political alarm clocks are on on a timer so that you don’t drift back into that convenient and comfortable coma. We have grown old and tired in the struggle, waiting for the heat to get close enough to singe you into not only wakefulness, but the genuine solidarity that can only come when you really get what chronic oppression, equality, and justice mean, on the ground, not as merely as words or symbols, or intellectual agreements.
People keep talking about “love” to me, but by the way that they’re using the term, it’s like spitting at an inferno. True love grows. It develops over time and trials, errors (complete fuck ups, actually) and a whole lot of difficult, painful, monotonous encounters, confrontations, tears, deep listening, real talk, and maturity. It grows from the trust that can only develop over time and going through shit together and getting through it, like veterans of war.
So stay woke, friends. Stay sober, woke, and committed. You must do right because it IMG_4436is right, not just because it touches you and yours, and most certainly not just to win. I know we will, but we’d better have a clear vision of what that means, the costs, and our willingness to get there. This is life work, my friends, not a “moment.”

Daughters: It don’t have to be true to be real.

I have just figured it out: for all women raised by southern women-Black, White, Native- it doesn’t matter- there’s a common denominator, a way of dealing and not dealing with stress that seems to be passed on from generation to generation. The thread of a very particular insanity flows through us although I’m unsure as to whether or not it’s in the blood, the bone, or the brain.

We seem all, in some way that’s not always obvious, to be playing to a “theme.” Yes, any good shrink will tell you that all humans are playing out certain archetypes and that the archetype has a story or stories and that in the course of our lives, we might play out several such stories, but there’s generally an overriding “type”that fits. Yet the southern version is a bit different. It’s more immediate and both less and more mysterious than the eternal struggle between the ego and the id. We write books and plays, choreograph and perform dances, skits, and dramas, on and off the stage. We sing, we decorate, we fashion our lives to support the theme we’ve been given and we pay homage, more consciously than most, to ancestors we may or may not venerate.

We “daughters of the dust” know better, and yet we still believe. That’s the essential difference and I cannot account for it other than to say that we’re taught by mothers-mouth to ear- who themselves excelled to varying degrees, in creatively draping the windows to suit the motifs  of their own lives. We are the best of good girls and we bring being bad to high art. We seem more often than not, to know who our audience is (the family, of course) and we seem to accept the boundaries on some level even when we dance on stages ten thousand miles away. We will dazzle and thrill you, charm the whiskers off a cat, go all “Bette Davis ” on you if need be, invoke the wrath in a glance, and we do all that we do wrapped in a cloak not of invincibility, but of right(eous)ness. We may be crippled and crazy and we may have made a complete mess of our lives and the lives of those around us, but in our hearts, we know that we do know what’s right and the proper order of things, and that if we can only “get ourselves straight/harness our resources/muster our strengths/ rest awhile/gather our wits/regroup/have a lie down/ a cup of tea-coffee-pick-me-up or just a finger of Jim Beam or a drop of whiskey or rye or a glass of sherry, nice ripe wine, grandmother’s ‘medicine’, a simple ‘cokecola’, or ‘that nice chamomile/peppermint/sassafras tea’, then We-the true women among women- can still somehow make it all work out!

I no longer care to delude myself that this is not true. It’s what we believe and it was passed onto us in some mysterious way, from our adored and benighted mothers, no matter what our relationship to them might be. There is great humor in this, often intended, frequently unamusing, and certainly not jokey.  I’m not sure how this works and why it’s different than the relationship that all other daughters have with their own crazy mothers, I just know that it is, and maybe that’s the only real point. My upbringing tells me so it must be true. Hah.

Why Occupy Matters to Me

I spent Christmas Eve, 2011, with my brother, his wife, three of _Picon.rlf_6.117-88his four children and other kith. As is true of all of our family gatherings, there was an abundance of laughter, teasing, drinking, eating, dancing, and storytelling. My brother is a pretty taciturn character until he’s had a bit of holiday cheer, at which point he becomes as garrulous as the rest of us, often remembering incidents that have been long forgotten.

Among the many trips we took down memory lane yesterday was his memory of my first publicized protest many years ago. He was reminded of the incident when he saw a photo of me at Zucotti/Liberation Park in support of OWS. The earlier posting had been in our local paper when a band of other teens and I staged a protest in our favorite park against a long-established curfew time. I was 17 and deeply in love with the spirit of the ’60’s and the Civil Rights Movement and my friends and I took every opportunity to express solidarity with the great protests of the time and to bring to light the real and imagined areas of oppression in our lives. With the self righteousness that only teens can muster, we decided to protest the local park curfew, gathering our little band of malcontents in front of the Lincoln statue, thus emphasizing our naively imagined connection to “The Great Liberator.” We were successful enough to garner police attention and some local news coverage, and the next day, my darker image stood out among the small group of white teen protesters whose photograph now graced the front page of the most widely read paper in our city.

I don’t remember how I found out about the photo, but I do remember the lightning fast understanding that my mother would “kill” me when she saw it. My brilliant solution was to reach every doorstep on our block and smudge or remove the incriminating picture before my mom could see it. This kind of childish logic should be proof enough that the human brain doesn’t finish working out the kinks until we’re in our twenties, because of course I couldn’t get to every paper in a city with more than 1/2 million people, many of whom had called my mother by the time I reluctantly returned home to hide.  I had foolishly wasted time smudging photos rather than patching up my integrity and preparing to defend my belief in my cause.  I had also unwittingly given my siblings ammunition for decades of teasing, perhaps the worst outcome of all.

I hadn’t thought about that incident for years when my brother brought it up yesterday, but once he did, I realized-not for the first time-that my basic character had been set from an early age. I truly believed in the rights of human beings, the protection of all living creatures, and the sacredness of the earth. I believed in true love, the innate goodness of people, and the ability of each generation to make the word a better place for all.

Over the years life has been hard, and childhood beliefs have taken a beating, to say the least. I’ve spent my life continuing to support my values through social actions, charitable donations, and as a professor who (I hope) provides an opportunity for students to gain some insight and appreciation for the realities and cultures of other people, as well as the chance to consider the construction of their own realities and cultures, often for the first time. It’s good work and I enjoy my students, who are smart and kind and generally willing to grapple with the very foreign ideas that I present to them. But at the core, I’ve been damaged-by the greed of the 80’s, ignorance and apathy of the 90’s, self-interests of the aughts, the failure of relationships, and my own historical research which is full of enough horrific examples of inhumanity to force even the most optimistic or naive person to recognize an unhappy pattern among humans, and to doubt the innate goodness of our species.

There have been events and actions that kept me from giving up and sometimes buoyed my spirits, but I was too experienced and educated to believe that we were going to save ourselves, much less the world. While others “blissed-out” on Obama, I felt a now familiar disappointment as he began building a cabinet with people whose policies helped bring us to our already unhappy state. Protests in Seattle and around the world gave me the satisfaction of knowing that there were some people to carry the torch and to continue to chip away at the mortar of the fortress of the world-wide oppression, discrimination and injustice, but that nugget of sadness remained in my heart.

I was sad and I saw the roots of cynicism reaching out to my soul. My personal dreams hadn’t come true and it seemed pretty clear that the world was- as my elders so often predicted, “going to Hell in a hand-basket.” And then came Occupy.

What appeared to most to be an unorganized group of “kids” were, to me, the _Picon.rlf_12.117-88representatives of a real dialectic, a very diverse group of people from every possible walk of life. I am not seeking, nor do I support concepts of perfection. Occupy is far from perfect and still far from obtaining its many goals. But what it is and represents is more than a glimmer of hope. It is diverse groups of people coming together in common cause. It is the first time since the mid 70’s that people seem to understand that most of us (the 99%) have more in common with one another than with our common oppressors and that together, we have the power to bring about change and perhaps even create a more just society. What a concept!

Occupy Wall Street got people talking and thinking again, and it has forced politicians to pay attention and change their agendas. That’s not small. And now it has spread around the world, a rallying point for the disparate issues that people must deal with in their own ways and through their own ideas about solidarity. Since I started this draft, many things have occurred, some aimed at belittling Occupy as well as the usual ego issues that every group has to face. But despite the many issues, the force continues, here- through movements like Occupy Sandy and Occupy Student Debt-and abroad, where people have actively mobilized against governments and cultural forces such as gender discrimination.

I have no more to say. The struggle is real and the work continues, but I remain thankful for all those out there who heed the call and continue to contribute in any way they can, to the betterment of this world that we all do occupy.
